LEWISTON, Maine – The 14th-ranked Amherst field hockey team won its fifth straight game Sunday with a 6-0 shutout win against Bates at Campus Avenue Field.
Four different players tallied goals for the Jeffs (5-2, 4-1 NESCAC) with a different player accounting for each of the team's four first-half tallies against the Bobcats (1-7, 0-6).
Alex Philie '14 opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a shot from the top of the circle before Katie Paolano '16 posted a goal less than two minutes later off a rebound. The visitors notched two more goals in the opening half – the first from Kerry Fusco '15 and the second off the stick of Sara Culhane '17. Krista Zsitvay '14 assisted on those scores, finding her teammates in front of the cage both times.
Paolano recorded the Jeffs' opening goal of the second half at the 47:19 mark before Culhane contributed an insurance tally in the 66th minute.
Amherst held advantages over Bates in shots (27-6), shots on goal (15-0), and penalty corners (9-5). Philie and Zsitvay led the Jeffs with six shots each while Zsitvay and Culhane paced the visitors with four shots on goal apiece. Goalkeepers Rachel Tannenbaum '15 and Emily Horowitz '17 combined for the shutout.
For the Bobcats, senior Lexie Carter registered a team-high three shots while senior captain Sarah Warden took two shots. Senior goalie Becca Otley made four saves in the first half while sophomore net-minder Cristina Vega stopped two shots in the second period.
Bates gained its best opportunity to score in the 33rd minute when a Carter shot went just wide of the mark shortly after a penalty corner from first-year Sydney Cowles.
Next, Bates plays at the University of Southern Maine on Thursday at 4 p.m. while Amherst hosts Keene State on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
