La Rose Makes 42 Saves in 3-1 Win Over Ephs

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – With the top seed in the NESCAC Men's Hockey Championship already secured, third-ranked Amherst College kept its foot on the gas pedal by earning a 3-1 win at Williams College on Saturday evening.  

The Lord Jeffs improved to 19-3-1 (16-1-0 NESCAC) with their sixth consecutive win against their archrivals, while the Ephs dropped to 10-8-5 (7-8-2 NESCAC). Amherst also bumped its overall win streak to seven games and has now won 11 straight in conference play. 

Jonathan La Rose '12 allowed four goals on 26 shots when he faced Williams during the regular season, but he made 42 saves and kept the Ephs scoreless for the first 58:33 on Saturday. La Rose improved to 14-1-1 on the season and is now 4-0-0 all-time against Williams. 

Two-time reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Mike Moher '13 recorded a goal for the fourth consecutive game, as he needed only 28 seconds to put the Jeffs on the board. Senior co-captain Eddie Effinger and Mark Colp '13 each recorded an assist on the play. 

The game's second goal didn't come until the 18:34 mark of the opening period, when Brian Safstrom '14 gave the Jeffs a 2-0 lead with an unassisted tally. After a scoreless second period, Colp made it a 3-0 game on an unassisted power-play goal 15:44 into the final frame. 

The Ephs finally found a solution to La Rose with 1:26 remaining in regulation when Craig Kitto scored at even strength. La Rose finished with 18 saves in the final period, while Ryan Purdy '12 concluded his night with 37 stops for Williams. 

Williams was 0-for-4 on the power play, making opponents 0-for-9 against the Jeffs on extra-man opportunities in the past four games.

The Lord Jeffs will conclude their regular season tomorrow with a 4 p.m. game at Middlebury. Amherst defeated the Panthers in overtime during the regular season by a score of 4-3.
