WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior forward Johnny Van Siclen had three goals and an assist and Dylan Trumble '13 tallied two goals to lead Amherst College to an 8-1 victory over Westfield State University in a non-conference men's ice hockey game on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Amherst (2-0-0) trailed 1-0 after the first period, but the Lord Jeffs erupted for five goals in the second frame and three more in the third. Tuesday marked Amherst's highest goal output since an 8-0 win over Salve Regina on Dec. 11, 2010.
Amherst quickly took a 2-1 lead as Mike Moher '13 scored 10 seconds into the second stanza and Van Siclen notched what stood up as the game winner 41 seconds later.
The line of Trumble, Mike Cashman '15 and Ryan Edwards '14 teamed up for second-period goals to stake Amherst to a 4-1 lead. The Lord Jeffs capped the second-period barrage on a short-handed goal by Van Siclen with four seconds remaining.
Senior Mark Colp finished with four points (one goal, three assists), as he and Moher assisted on Van Siclen's hat-trick goal with 2:05 left in the game.
Sophomore defender Ryan Sullivan gave the Owls (2-3-2) their first-period lead by scoring 4:12 into the game.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action this weekend when they travel to Hyannis for the Cape Cod Lighthouse Invitational Tournament. Amherst will first take on Salem State Saturday at 2 p.m.
