AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's ice hockey team picked up a 3-0 win over Skidmore College this evening in a home game at Orr Rink. Amherst grabbed a pair of goals from senior Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA), while sophomore Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, AB) posted the shutout in net.
The first period of action came-and-went in Amherst without either team scoring a goal, but each team had a significant scoring chance during the frame. Nearly halfway through the period, Skidmore had a chance when a rebound caught Anderson out of position. The puck ended up behind the net-minder, but a Lord Jeff teammate cleared it out of danger.
Later in the first period, Amherst rookie Mike Baran (Duxbury, MA) beat a Thoroughbred defender down the left boards and centered the puck to junior Keith Nelson (Manalapan, NJ) for a point blank shot. Nelson put his bid on frame, but Skidmore's goaltender tipped the attempt over the goal with his shoulder.
Amherst opened the game's scoring with 13:10 to play in the second period on the power play. Senior captain Jeff Landers (Hanover, MA) took a slap shot that was tipped by junior Ted Vickers (Chilliwack, BC). The deflection caused a rebound, while Powers put home for the eventual game-winner.
Just 28 seconds later, Amherst scored once again on the power play. Landers started the scoring play during a long possession for Amherst inside the Skidmore zone. Landers found Jeff rookie Mark Colp (Wareham, MA) along the boards, who quickly it Powers cutting to the crease. Powers scored his second of the night by calmly poking a shot past the goaltender.
The third period was marred by a flurry of penalties against Amherst, including five during a five minute window and a 10-minute misconduct penalty against senior Rylan Burns (Jasper, AB). With 3:12 to play in the game, Landers iced the game for the Jeffs when he intercepted a pass and went from his own blue line in on a breakaway. Landers scored glove side for the third and final goal of the night.
Anderson made 36 saves in net for Amherst earning the shutout win, while Colin Bessey made 36 stops for Skidmore. Amherst will break for the week before playing at Tufts next Friday night at 7 p.m.
