TUCSON, AZ – The Amherst College softball team posted a pair of shutouts on Tuesday to increase its winning streak to three games. The Lord Jeffs earned a 10-0 win over Nichols College before handing Bethany Lutheran College a 7-0 setback to move to 3-3 on their Spring Break trip. Amherst will use Wednesday to recover before playing another two games on Thursday.
Senior pitcher Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) allowed just three hits and got plenty of run support from her teammates, as she picked up her first victory of the season against Nichols. Fellow senior tri-captain Liz Neckes (Dover, MA) once again led the way at the plate by driving in three runs in a 2-for-4 performance. Sophomores Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) and Emily Neill (Kentfield, CA) each had an RBI and went a combined 5-for-8, while junior Holly Trace (Northport, AL) and first-year Katie Kervick (Windsor Locks, CT) also drove in one run apiece.
The nightcap against Bethany Lutheran was much of the same for Amherst, but this time it was sophomore Alexandra Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) earning the win on the mound. Chang-Graham struck out eight and allowed only two hits to move to move to 2-1 on the season.
Senior tri-captain Kelly King (Grosse Point Park, MI) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game, with Kervick adding a 2-RBI double. Tyler had two hits for the third game in a row, while Trace chipped in with an RBI-double.
Through the first six games of Amherst's southern swing, Tyler is leading the way with a .545 batting average. Helping lead the offense are Neil and King at .471 and .429, respectively, with Kervick hitting at an impressive .385 clip in her rookie campaign.
