Jeffs Top Wheaton and Wellesley in Day One

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College volleyball team moved to 21-2 on the season with a pair of 3-0 wins in day one of the Hall of Fame Tournament in LeFrak Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Jeffs topped Wheaton College in quick fashion, winning 30-14, 30-13, and 30-15, before commanding a 33-31, 30-21, 30-24 victory over Wellesley College.

Amherst finished Wheaton off in its opening match by posting a season-high 22 service aces, and playing tough defense. The Jeffs tallied 15 blocks and 54 digs in the match. The Lyons posted an impressive 60 digs in the match, but couldn't slow down Amherst senior co-captain hitter Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA), who racked up 10 kills and six blocks. Sophomore hitter Alison Munzer (Los Angeles, CA) marked a season-high 11 kills and four digs of her own.

In its second-round match, Amherst faced stiff competition from Wellesley, going to bonus volleyball in game one. Amherst was winning the opening game 27-20 before a late Wellesley rally forced the Jeffs to step up one more time for the win. Junior hitter Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) paced the Jeffs in the second match, and finished the bout with 15 kills, five aces and 15 digs.

In other tournament action, Wellesley beat Colby College in a five-game thriller led by Laura Ackerman's 22 kills, before Colby toppled Wheaton 3-1 in the nightcap.

Amherst returns to action Saturday when it continues the tournament at Smith College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
