Jeffs Trip Up Tufts, 4-1

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's hockey team extended its conference win streak to six consecutive games as they tripped up visiting NESCAC rival Tufts University on Saturday afternoon, 4-1. Juniors Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) and Erik Lund (Edina, MN) tallied a goal and an assist apiece as the Jeffs improved to 12-5-1 overall and 9-3-1 in conference play.

Tufts got on the board first as first-year Joe Milo (Woodbury, NY) scored a controversial goal, which seemed to slide under the right side of the Amherst net. After deliberations among the referees the goal was counted and rookies Andrew Delorey (Norwell, MA) and Phil Clark (Norfolk, MA) were credited with assists.

Amherst responded in the second frame as rookie Will Collins (Edina, MN) made a phenomenal play, drawing a Tufts defender and sophomore netminder James Kalec (E. Amherst, NY) towards him before dropping a perfect feed to a charging Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO), who stuffed home the equalizer. Senior A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) gave the Jeffs the lead for good at the 11:43-mark of the second session, flipping home a rebounded shot from first-year Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA).

Ellis continued the Amherst scoring just over eight minutes into the final stanza, sniping a shot from the right side off feeds from Lund and sophomore Gregg Adamo (Manalapan, NJ). Ellis returned the favor to Lund in the closing seconds, finding him for the empty-netter.

Zangel made the box score for his seventh straight game and was a menace defensively, dealing out a series of punishing hits throughout the game.

Amherst junior goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) piled up 31 saves in the victory, while Kalec tallied 35 stops as the Jumbos fell to 8-8-2 overall and 5-7-1 in conference play.

Amherst returns to the ice Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
