AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team won its second game in as many days, blanking visiting conference rival Bates College on Sunday, 4-0. Senior forward Erin Leydon (Bridgton, ME) found the cage twice, while fellow senior Lauren Anderson (Telluride, CO) and first-year Carolyn Shea (Summit, NJ) each scored once as the Jeffs improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Bates fell to 3-3 (1-1 NESCAC) with the loss.
Amherst opened the scoring at the 19:13-mark of the first half as junior Katherine Skrivan (St. Louis, MO) received a pass on a penalty corner and fired the ball towards Leydon, who redirected it into the cage. Anderson doubled the lead just 1:50 later as she gathered her own rebound and punched it past the Bates goalkeeper for the score. Leydon added her second goal just 2:12 before the break off a long pass from sophomore Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY). Shea tallied her first goal of the year in the 20th minute of the second half, finding the cage off a feed from junior Molly Gilbert (Philadelphia, PA).
Amherst senior K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) and first-year Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) combined for the shutout in goal as Cosentino collected five saves, while junior Sarah Judice (Granby, CT) was credited with 10 stops for the Bobcats.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Mt. Holyoke College.
