Jeffs Win Home Opener, Blank Smith, 3-0

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team blanked visiting non-conference foe Smith College 3-0 in its home opener on Tuesday. The Jeffs' defense was stifling, not relinquishing a shot to the visiting Pioneers, while seniors Erin Leydon (Bridgton, ME) and Lauren Anderson (Telluride, CO) and junior Molly Gilbert (Philadelphia, PA) each tallied a goal for Amherst, which improves to 1-1 with the win.

The Jeffs knocked in the game-winner just before the eight-minute mark of the first half as sophomore Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY) found Gilbert in front of the cage for the first of her game-high two assists. The second came at the 16:09-mark of the second half as Anderson deflected a hard shot past the Smith goalie. Leydon capped the scoring just over nine minutes later as junior Katherine Skrivan (St. Louis, MO) fed her in the circle and she used a nifty backhand to find the cage.

Amherst senior goalie K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) posted her sixth career shutout, while senior Sydney Siegel (Glencoe, IL) and junior Megan Maguire (Hatfield, MA) split time in goal for Smith, collecting three saves each.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m., hosting NESCAC opponent Bates College.
