Hughes Earns First Coaching Win, Showler Kicks 13th-Ranked Jeffs Past Trinity

HARTFORD, CT - Senior midfielder Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) netted the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to give the defending NESCAC Champion Amherst College women's soccer team, ranked 13th in the nation and No. 2 in New England, a 3-2 win at conference rival Trinity College in both teams' season opener on Saturday. Showler's heroics gave Amherst interim head coach Jen Hughes her first collegiate coaching victory and the Jeffs' first win over Trinity since 2000.

Trailing 2-1 after 80 minutes of play, Amherst scored twice in the final 10 minutes to steal the victory. Senior forwad Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) fed sophomore forward Amy Armstrong (Avon, Conn.) on Amherst's second goal to knot the score at 2-2 with 18:14 remaining and then Armstrong fed Showler in the middle of the box for the deciding tally.

The Bantams trailed 1-0 early after a goal by Showler 1:53 into the contest, but Trinity junior forward Kristen Geiger (Canterbury, N.H.) put a perfect shot into the upper left corner of the net off a feed from senior captain midfielder Nicole Mauger (East Bridgewater, Mass.) with 13:09 left in the first half. Trinity took the lead in the 48th minute when sophomore midfielder Megan Kravitz (East Longmeadow, Mass.) blasted a direct kick into the upper left corner of the net. The Bantams had a goal nullified by the officials midway through the second half that would have given them a two-goal cushion.

Sophomore goalie Piper Crowell (San Rafael, Calif.) tallied three saves for Amherst. The Jeffs return to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., hosting non-league foe Eastern Connecticut State University.
