BRUNSWICK, ME - The Amherst College men's hockey team dropped its regular-season finale at Bowdoin College on Saturday, 4-1. Amherst senior Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL) lit the lamp just 14 seconds into regulation, but the Polar Bears responded with four unanswered goals, including a pair of third-period scores by junior Shannon McNevan, to earn the win. Amherst finishes the regular season 11-10-3 overall and 6-10-2 in conference play, and enters next weekend's NESCAC Tournament as the No. 8 seed.
Amherst juniors Jon Hill (Averill Park, NY) and Roy Mabrey (Needham, MA) fed Kreger for the early 1-0 edge, and the Jeffs held the lead until Bowdoin first-year Nick Dunn's game-tying tally at the 15:59-mark. Sophomore Jon Landry netted the game-winner for the Polar Bears in the first minute of a penalty-marred second frame. The two squads combined for 14 of the game's 22 penalties in the period, but neither side took advantage of the power-play opportunities. McNevan tacked on a power-play goal 5:19 into the final session and capped the scoring at the 7:53-mark off an assist from first-year Ian Hanley.
First-year goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) collected 42 saves for the Jeffs, while Bowdoin sophomore goalie George Papachristopoulos posted 14 saves in net as the Polar Bears finished the regular season 16-7 overall and 12-6 in conference play.
This marks the final regular-season game for Kreger and fellow seniors Chris Norqual (Eden Prairie, MN), Josh Hoffman (Rydal, PA) and co-captain John McNicholas (Lake Forest, IL).
Amherst returns to action next Saturday, facing top-seeded host Middlebury College in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament.
