AMHERST, MA - The 14th-ranked Amherst College men's hockey team earned a narrow 3-2 victory over visiting ECAC East foe Southern Maine on Friday night. Amherst sophomore A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) netted the game-winner for the Jeffs, who snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 8-3-2 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play with the win.
The Jeffs took the lead in the first period as first-year Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) and junior Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN) fed sophomore Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA) for his first goal of the year. The score remained 1-0 until the third period when Amherst junior Jon Hill (Averill Park, NY) fired in a short-handed wrister off a John McNicholas (Lake Forest, IL) assist. The Huskies cut the lead to one as senior Chad Lauze (Gorham, NH) netted a power-play goal off assists from junior Jon Lounsbury (Winthrop, MA) and senior Jeremy Felt (Killingworth, CT). Greco pushed the lead back to two with a backhand past Southern Maine goalie Matt Collaton (Oakville Ontario) at the 16:18-mark as senior defender Chris Norqual (Eden Prarie, MN) and Greeley tallied their sixth and second assists of the year, respectively. The Huskies tried to rally as Lauze took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play with 1:24 left in regulation, but first-year goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) held on for the Jeffs.
Fillman posted 28 saves for Amherst, while Collaton collected 23 for Southern Maine, which falls to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play with the loss.
