AMHERST, MA - The 13th-ranked Amherst College men's hockey team fell to NESCAC, ECAC East and Little Three rival Wesleyan University 3-1 on Saturday. The Cardinals used second-period goals from senior Grant Savage (Rye, NY) and first-years Ryan Hendrickson (Georgetown, MA) and Will Bennett (Dedham, MA) as they improved to 6-3-2 (4-1-1 ECAC East), while Amherst dropped to 7-2-2 (3-2-1 ECAC East). Amherst sophomore A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) prevented the shutout as he scored his third goal of the year.
Wesleyan took the lead 1:35 into the second session as first-year Taylor Evans (Milton, MA) and senior Casey Benny (Alex Bay, NY) found Hendrickson for the score. Bennett doubled the Cardinals lead with a power-play goal at the 4:50-mark. Greco answered with a power-play goal of his own as junior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) and junior defenseman Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN) fed him near the net and he wrapped it around Wesleyan goalie Jim Panczykowski (Cattaraugus, NY) to cut the lead to one. However, Wesleyan went on the power play again and Savage sealed the win off assists from junior Chris Gateman (Greenville RI) and Benny. Amherst first-year Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) had 14 saves in net, while Panczykowski posted 38 saves for the Cardinals.
Amherst returns to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at NESCAC and ECAC East foe Hamilton College.
