AMHERST, MA - Off to its best start in school history, visiting fourth-ranked Middlebury College remained undefeated at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in NESCAC play with a 3-2 field hockey win at 13th-ranked Amherst College on Saturday. The loss was Amherst's second straight after starting the season with six consecutive victories.
Middlebury senior Char Glessner (Ipswich, MA) tapped home the unassisted game-winner with 11:42 left in regulation - her team-leading seventh goal of the season - after sophomore Allison Smith (Darien, CT) knotted the score with her second goal of the game with 29:03 remaining.
Amherst took a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to a pair of goals by rookie Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY), the second of which was assisted by senior co-captain Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ). Middlebury opened the scoring with 9:23 left in the first half, courtesy of an unassisted strike by Smith.
Middlebury first-year goalie Meghan McGillen (Harwich, MA) finished with eight saves in the win. Junior netminder K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) turned away four shots for Amherst, which fell to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the NESCAC.
Amherst returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Keene State College.
