AMHERST, MA - Junior co-captain Jenn Wasserman (Branford, CT) broke a 1-1 tie with 1:15 left in overtime as the Wesleyan University field hockey team spoiled Amherst College Homecoming with a 2-1 upset win over the 16th-ranked Lord Jeffs on Saturday. Wasserman's game-winner, which came off an assist from fellow co-captain Mara Gross (Wendell, MA), lifted the Cardinals to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in NESCAC play, while the Jeffs fell to 8-3 (4-2 NESCAC) with just their second conference loss.
Amherst sent the game into overtime when junior Lauren Anderson (Telluride, CO) scored an unassisted goal, her first of the season, with 18:15 left in regulation. Anderson's tally answered a first half goal by Wesleyan junior Louisa Mook (Newcastle, ME), who connected off a nifty feed from classmate Megan Gauvey-Kern (Baltimore, MD).with 22:12 left before halftime. The Jeffs had a goal nullified near the end of the first half, as the officials waived off a score by sophomore Katherine Skrivan (St. Louis, MO), claiming senior co-captain Christine Ryan's (Summit, NJ) pass from outside the circle wasn't tipped before going into the cage.
Both goalies were stellar, but Wesleyan rookie Caitlin Kelly's (Midlothian, VA) two overtime saves proved to be the difference. Junior goalie K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) turned away five shots for the Jeffs.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Connecticut College.
