Field Hockey Blanked by Bates, 2-0

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team fell to visiting conference foe Bates College, 2-0, on Saturday. With the loss the Jeffs drop to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play while the Bobcats improve to 1-3 and 1-1.

The game started off on a wild note, with the two sides fighting to get the ball into scoring position for much of the first half. Amherst first-year goalkeeper Anne McMullen (St. Louis, MO) sprawled out for two saves in the first half. The Bobcats were relentless, though, and senior forward Johie Farrar (West Paris, ME) slipped an unassisted tally past McMullen in the waning seconds of the opening stanza to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Jeffs poured on the offensive pressure in the second half of play, registering four shots on goal from four different players. But the effort was in vain, and Bates senior goalkeeper Lindsay Gary (Del Mar, CA) made three saves to preserve the victory. Bates tacked on another goal 12 minutes into the final half when junior forward Lori Jessup (Hatboro, PA) found a way past McMullen off an assist from senior teammate Katherine Tiffany (Boston, MA) to round the score out at 2-0.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. at non-league foe Springfield College.
