AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team played aggressively today, taking a 2-0 game over visiting Smith College. With the win, the Jeffs improved to 2-1 heading into a Saturday morning matchup with NESCAC rival Bates College. The Pioneers, meanwhile, fall to 1-2 on the young season.
Amherst took control of the game early. Junior Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) took a pass from senior Katherine Ryan (Westborough, MA) and slipped a goal past Smith rookie goalkeeper Rebecca Spalding (Springfield, VA) 4:27 into the first half. The lone tally was all the Jeffs would need to take the win, but they weren't done yet. Sophomore Erin Leydon (Bridgeton, ME) netted another goal off a rebound with 14 minutes to play in the first half. Spalding had a busy day between the pipes for Smith, tallying seven saves on the afternoon. On the other side of the field, Pioneer juniors Hadley Gerhardt (Chester Springs, PA) and Amanda Clemons (Moretown, VT) combined for four shots, but neither could muscle the ball past the Jeff defense. Amherst sophomore goalkeeper K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) stretched out for three saves.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Bates College.
