FROM A MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE RELEASE
MIDDLEBURY, VT - After trailing 2-1 with less than 30 minutes remaining, the Amherst College women's soccer team rallied to down host Middlebury College, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) paced the Jeffs with a pair of goals, including the game-winner.
Amherst pierced the scoring column 7:56 into the game when Harmeling gathered a rebound and found the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage at halftime. Middlebury's Leah Cumsky-Whitlock netted a goal 11 minutes into the second stanza, knotting the score at 1-1. She then notched her second goal of the contest in the 72nd minute, converting on a penalty kick to put the Panthers ahead 2-1. Shortly thereafter, Jeff sophomore midfielder Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) took a nifty feed from first-year back Allyson Heady (Stony Point, NY) and tickled the twine to even the score at 2-2. Harmeling tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season, shaking a defender and firing a shot late in the contest to give Amherst the victory.
Senior co-captain Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) recorded seven saves for the Jeffs while Els Van Woert stopped four shots for Middlebury. With the victory, Amherst improves to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play while the Panthers drop to 4-3-1 and 2-2-1.
The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Colby College.
