Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss, 2-1, to Trinity

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team succumbed to an upstart Trinity College squad on Tuesday, losing its first game of the season, 2-1, and falling to 4-1 (3-1 NESCAC).

Trinity's game-winner came with 30 minutes remaining in the second half on a free kick. From 22 yards straight out, Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury, CT) tapped the ball and Meghan Roscio (Glastonbury, CT) blasted a shot to the left which went off the outstretched hands of Amherst goalie Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY).

Amherst mounted intense pressure for the remainder of the game, particularly with numerous corner kicks, but the Trinity defense and goalie Sarah Bradley (Mansfield, CT) continuously stymied the attack.

The day had started strong for the Jeffs as Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) scored her fourth goal of the season a mere two minutes into the game. Montigny took a deflected crossing pass from senior forward Cathy Poor (Harwich Port, MA) and tapped it home for an early 1-0 lead. However, Trinity struck back only three minutes later, when Nicole Mauger (E. Bridgewater, MA) blasted a shot into the left corner to deadlock the game at 1-1.

Amherst first-year striker Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) put in a strong offensive performance, while Katharine Shipley (Newton, MA) was steady from her sweeper position. Putnam had three saves in goal for Amherst, while Bradley stopped six shots for Trinity. Amherst returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. against visiting non-leauge opponent Springfield College.
