HARTFORD, CT - The Amherst College volleyball team used match-highs of 18 kills and 20 assists, respectively, from senior co-captains Erica Hewes (Pebble Beach, CA) and Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA) en route to a 3-0 win in a non-league tilt at NESCAC rival Trinity College on Wednesday. The Jeffs were playing their first match against Trinity since former Amherst player and assistant Angie (Povoli) Mills took over as the Bantams' head coach.
Amherst - which improved to 13-2 overall with the win - made quick work of Trinity with game scores of 30-18, 30-28 and 30-21. Aside from Hewes and DeMeules, first-year setter Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) paced the Jeffs with 12 assists and six kills. Amherst was also strong defensively with sophomore middle blockers Lauren Wong (San Francisco, CA) and Natalie Brooks (Catonsville, MD) combining for 10 blocks.
Trinity senior Kristen Hagan (Kentfield, CA) led the Bantams with eight kills and 10 digs in defeat, as they fell to 8-8 overall.
Amherst returns to action this Friday and Saturday for a NESCAC quad at Bowdoin College, taking on Colby College Friday at 8 p.m., Bates College Saturday at 1 p.m. and the host Polar Bears Saturday at 3 p.m. The Jeffs are currently jammed in a three-way tie atop the NESCAC standings with Bates and Tufts University with matching 3-1 conference marks, followed by Trinity, Wesleyan University and Williams College at 2-1.
