Ouimet's Twin Tallies Lead No. 8 Amherst Past Smith, 2-0

NORTHAMPTON, MA - Junior forward Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) scored her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season - both in the second half - as the eighth-ranked Amherst College field hockey team improved to 9-2 overall with a 2-0 shutout win at non-league foe Smith College (4-11) on Thursday night.

The Jeffs dominated play, if not the scoring column, in the first half, outshooting the hosts 20-5 before the break. Under siege, Smith goaltender Sydney Siegel turned away nine shots in the first half to keep the underdog Pioneers in the game.

Amherst continued its assault in the second half, and Ouimet finally broke through with 16:07 left in regulation off a tidy feed from first-year forward Erin Layden (Bridgeton, ME) - her first career assist. With the game-winner already in tow, Ouimet added an insurance tally with 4:41 remaining to set the final score at 2-0.

Amherst senior goalie Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) posted seven saves en route to her fourth shutout, while Siegel finished with 13 in defeat, as the Jeffs outshot Smith 29-9 overall.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at conference rival Williams College. With matching 4-2 league marks, The Jeffs are currently tied for third place in the NESCAC with Colby College, just behind first place Middlebury College (6-1) and second place Bowdoin College at (5-2). Amherst has just three conference games remaining against Williams, Tufts and Wesleyan Universities, before the seven-team NESCAC Championship Tournament kicks off at Bates College on Sunday, Oct. 21.
