AMHERST, MA - Lauren Anderson (Far Hills, NJ) scored her first career goal 10 minutes into the game and the Amherst College field hockey team proceeded to cruise to a 5-0 victory over M.I.T. in a make-up game on Monday afternoon. The Jeffs outshot the Engineers 37-1 and improved their record to 7-1 overall.
The Jeffs dominated from the start of play, and with 25:25 left in the first, Anderson, a first-year midfielder, blasted home a shot from 10 yards out after receiving a feed from senior tri-captain Mairin Brady (Bethesda, MD). Senior defender Laurie Smith (Wilmington, DE) added her first goal of the season three minutes later on a similar blast from straight on after an assist from Robin Ackerman (Princeton, NJ). Two minutes later, Ackerman scored on her own, the third goal of the season for the senior forward.
First-year forward Erin Layden (Bridgton, ME) completed the first half scoring with her first career goal with seven minutes remaining on a feed from junior forward Jenna Obelsky (Stoughton, MA). In the second half, Anderson scored again to increase the Amherst lead to 5-0.
Amherst goalie Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) didn't make a save, nor did KC Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) when she entered the game for the last twenty minutes. M.I.T. starting goalie Kathleen Rubritz (Wexford, PA) made 11 saves, while her second half replacement, Tiffany Kanaga (Greenville, DE) made 13 tough saves while only allowing one goal.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at NESCAC foe Trinity College.
