HENNIKER, NH - Senior Tri-captain Chris Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) broke a 3-3 tie 18:21 into the third period with his fourth goal of the season as the Amherst College men's hockey team came from behind to win its fourth straight, 5-3 at New England College on Friday night.
Orszulak connected on a right-handed wrist shot off a pair of nifty touch-passes from junior Bob Miele (Woburn, MA) and senior Gregg DiNardo (North Reading, MA) after NESCAC Player of the Week Darren Reaume (West Seneca, NY) stripped the puck from New England College's Pat Bryant at center ice to set up the game-winner.
The Jeffs jumped in front 2-0 in the first period on a pair of goals by seniors Stephen Tornabene (San Mateo, CA) and Jim Smith (Rochester, MN), but New England College battled back with three unanswered scores in the second period, including a pair of goals by Mike Stack assisted by teammate Mike Johnson.
Down 3-2 midway through the third period, sophomore forward Erik DiNardo (North Reading, MA) took a feed from super-soph Justin Pitrack (Wilmette, IL) and sent a one-timer rocketing past New England College goaltender Ryan Thompson to knot the score at three. Orszulak's game-winner later in the third forced New England College to pull its goaltender in the waning seconds, setting up an empty-net tap-in for senior forward Rob Hill (Averil Park, NY) to set the final score at 5-3.
Senior goaltender Nick Rieser (Northfield, IL) had 38 saves for Amherst, who improved to 4-1 with the non-league win, while New England College fell to 3-3 with the loss.
The Jeffs return to the ice at St. Anselm College Saturday at 3 p.m.
