AMHERST, MA - After dropping its season-opener 5-4 to Connecticut College on Friday night, Amherst College evened its men's hockey record to 1-1 with a 9-1 win over visiting NESCAC rival Wesleyan University (0-2/0-2) Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink.
The Jeffs scored seven goals in the third period to break open what was a 2-1 game. Senior Rob Hill (Averil Park, NY) and rookie forward Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL) led the way with a pair of natural hat-tricks - a career-first for both players. Kreger also assisted on third period goals by sophomore forward Erik DiNardo (North Reading, MA) and junior forward Dave Moore (Randolph, MA).
Senior forward Gregg DiNardo (North Reading, MA) also scored for the Jeffs, while senior defenseman Darce Swaggert (Wayzata, MN) and junior forward Gregg Carr (Hanover, MA) added three and two assists, respectively.
Amherst senior Nick Rieser (Northfield, IL) was stellar in goal with 13 saves, allowing just one score to Wesleyan rookie forward Tim Joncas (Branford, CT), assisted by sophomore Brian Maynes (Germantown, MD) and senior Steve Cucinatti (Winchester, MA) in the second period. Sophomore goalie Jaffrie Perrotti (Winthrop, MA) relieved Rieser in the third period and tallied three saves in the last 10:10 for the Jeffs.
Amherst returns to Orr Rink next weekend for the Ben McCabe Tournament - featuring NESCAC rivals Wesleyan, Conn. College and Trinity - at 1:00 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
