Men's Hockey Falls 5-4 to Conn. College in Season-Opener

AMHERST, MA - Connecticut College senior wing Pete Halfer (Huntington, NY) scored three goals for a natural hat-trick and junior defenseman Matt Coleman (Canton, MA) added the short-handed game-winner with 9:50 remaining as Amherst College dropped its season and NESCAC opener 5-4 to the visiting Camels on Friday night.

The two teams spent most of the game on the power-play with 21 penalties combined for 58 minutes. Amherst rallied from a 3-1 first-intermission deficit with two goals in the first 1:35 of the second period. After a Conn. College goal, the Jeffs would tie the game at four on a goal from senior Tri-captain Chris Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) with 4:39 left in the third.

Amherst junior forward Darren Reaume (West Seneca, NY) had a goal and two assists in defeat, while senior defenseman Jim Smith (Rochester, MN) added a goal and an assist. Sophomore center Mike Hasenauer (Weston, CT) had four assists for the Camels, who improved to 1-0 with the road victory.

Conn. College first-year goalie Brett Roth (Charlotte, NC), making his first career start, turned away 34 Amherst shots for the win.

Amherst returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. against NESCAC rival Wesleyan University.
