MIDDLEBURY, Vermont Amherst College sophomore Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) tallied her sixth goal of the season 7:08 into the second half to lift the visiting Jeffs to a 1-0 victory over host Middlebury College in a NESCAC showdown in Vermont on Saturday afternoon.
Ouimet, who scored the pivotal game-winner 4:36 into the second half of the Jeffs¹ thrilling 2-1 win at fifth-ranked Springfield College on September 19, played the hero again on Saturday. The sophomore broke what had been a scoreless tie at the half with her conversion of a feed from Jeff Co-captain Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, NH).
The Panthers had dominated the first half offensively, outshooting the Jeffs 8-1 in the first 35 minutes. Junior Amherst goalie Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) was up to the task, however, posting all of her seven saves in the opening period.
The second half saw the two teams reverse rolls, as the Jeffs, ranked fifth in the nation in the latest NFHCA poll, held the Panthers without a shot, posting eight of their own after halftime. On their third attempt of the period, Ouimet converted a nifty feed from Bowe, besting Panther goalie Becca Randall, who posted seven of her game-high eight saves in the second half, to provide the match¹s lone goal.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 9-1 for the season, 5-1 in NESCAC play. Middlebury, the 1998 NCAA champions, falls to 3-7 on the season (2-4 NESCAC), though five of their seven losses have come in one-goal games, four of those coming against ranked opponents. Sensing, who also posted a shutout in the Jeffs¹ 3-0 win over Trinity College on Thursday, notched her fifth shutout of the season, and the 25th of her stellar career.
