Roger An

Roger An joined the Amherst College track and field program as an assistant coach in 2021. An brings several years of coaching experience to Amherst having served as assistant head track and field/cross country coach at Lake Superior State University and assistant recruiting coordinator for all events there. He also took on the duties of the program's strength and conditioning coordinator for all student-athletes on the Lake State track and cross country teams.

An co-headed the sprint crew at Lake Superior State to remarkable improvements. 19 of the 21 sprinters he coached, roughly 90 percent, broke personal records while An helped the school’s top women’s sprinter improve her top indoor marks from 8.64 to 7.86 in the 60 meters and from 28.61 to 25.60 in the 200 meters during the indoor season; personal records of roughly 0.8 and 3 seconds, respectively.

During An’s tenure, Lake Superior’s women's team had its highest-scoring conference meet since 2014 during the indoor championships in 2020 with 11 points. An helped Elizabeth Setsuda, Lake Superior’s top sprinter, to qualify for the championship’s finals for the first time in her career in the 60 and 200 meters. She also contributed in the relays and jumps to score over 6 points at the meet after the women's program scored only 1 points combined over the previous four seasons.

A former two-sport varsity letterman in both football and track and field for The College of Wooster, An graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Africana Studies. His research in athletics capped off his senior independent study at Wooster, which was titled, "Elite African American Football Players’ Career Paths from College, Professional Franchises, and Post Professional Athletic Careers", during the year in which he earned dean’s list honors. An was also named Wooster’s North Coast Athletic Conference Branch Rickey Coaching Fellow in 2016-17, and was a senior leadership committee member for the track and field teams during his senior year. He brings to the Mammoths the knowledge, skills and passion for the Division III student-athlete experience developed during his own time as a student-athlete. An is a USATF Level 1 Certified Coach and is also a USTFCCCA Certified Speed Specialist Coach.
