Bob Ryan is a retired Boston Globe sportswriter who began writing for the Globe in 1968, covering all of Boston’s sports teams. Ryan, described as “the quintessential American sportswriter” and a “basketball guru”, established himself as a luminary of the Boston professional sports community with his in-depth coverage of the Celtics throughout the 1970s. Throughout his time with the Globe, Ryan has authored over 10 books such as Wait Till I Make The Show, Boston Celtics: The History, Legends, and Images of America’s Most Celebrated Team, and The Four Seasons. Additionally, he has also co-authored biographies of Celtics legends Larry Bird, Bob Cousy, and John Havlicek.
Ryan, who graduated with a degree in history from Boston College in 1968, has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout the course of his career, receiving the 1996 Curt Gowdy Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame and the 2006 Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Journalism. Ryan was also named the 2000 AP National Sportswriter of the Year. In addition to his writing, Ryan is also a frequent guest on such ESPN programs as Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption, and the Sports Reporters.
Ryan, who published his final column on a full-time basis with the Boston Globe at the conclusion of the London 2012 Olympics, currently resides in Hingham, Massachusetts.
