Abby Wambach, born in 1980 and the youngest of seven children, hails from Rochester, NY. A fiercely competitive person, Abby honed her soccer skills and was the number one soccer recruit in the country. Abby chose to play at the University of Florida, a school that had just added a soccer program four years earlier, where she helped lead the team to four consecutive SEC conference championships and one national championship in 1998, beating powerhouse North Carolina, which had just won back-to-back championships.
In 2002, Wambach was selected second overall in the WUSA (Women’s United Soccer Association) draft and was named to the American roster for the 2003 World Cup. Abby has been on the women’s national team roster ever since and has earned one bronze and one silver World Cup medals, in addition to two Olympic golds. In June 20, 2013 Abby shattered the all-time International goal scoring record last set by Mia Hamm; in fact, Abby has scored more goals than any other soccer player, male or female, in the history of International soccer.
Abby has recently started ramping up her training to prepare for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup this upcoming June and is determined to capture the first place title that has eluded her since the beginning of her soccer career.
