#5 Mammoths' Rally Falls Just Short, Drop 10-7 Game to #17 Bantams

HARTFORD, CT. – A fourth quarter rally was not enough as No. 5 Amherst women's lacrosse team stumbled in the regular season finale against Trinity on Wednesday, April 22. Taking the short trip down to Hartford to take on the No. 17 Bantams, the Mammoths went down early and were unable to fight their way back late, ultimately falling short 10-7.

With the loss, Amherst slips to 12-3 overall and 7-3 in the NESCAC while the Bantams improve to 11-4 (7-3 NESCAC). The Mammoths had clinched a spot in the NESCAC playoffs going into the day and now hold the #5 seed in the NESCAC tournament. With the result tonight, a rematch with the fourth seeded Bantams in Hartford is on tap on Saturday, April 26. The game time is to be determined.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Trinity opened the game with a goal, but Clara Sosa was quick to respond. The senior drew the foul and converted the resulting free position attempt to tie the game at 1-1. However, the Bantams scored twice in the final 5 minutes of the frame to take a 3-1 lead into the second.

* The Mammoths' deficit grew to three goals with a Trinity tally early in the second. Bridget Finley put one away to bring Amherst within two, catching a Kate Becker pass and shooting from just inside the right corner of the 8-meter to make it 4-2. But again, the Bantams took control, scoring three unanswered to enter the half up 7-2.

* Amherst got off on the right foot after the break, with Emma Crotty cutting to the net, receiving a pass from Sosa, and finishing over two defenders to shrink the Bantam lead to four with 8:36 to go in the quarter.

* That was the only goal of the quarter, and the game entered the decisive final period with the Mammoths trailing 7-3. Trinity got the scoring started, but Amherst got the goal right back. This time, it was Mia Raven scoring off a Becker helper, with the junior finishing the play to cut the lead once again.

* Trinity netted next, but Amherst was able to string back-to-back goals together: the first came by way of Izzie Brabant. The first year put in an incredible solo effort, split dodging through two defenders on a run to the net and scoring to make it 9-5. Emily Petersen got the next goal immediately after a clear, with Becker running past the restraining line, sprinting down the left side and hitting the Mammoths' leading scorer in stride to her right. The senior made no mistake, scoring to reduce the margin to three with 3:45 to go.

* That would be as close as Amherst would get, though, as Trinity potted the dagger with 2:11 to go to shut the door on an Amherst rally. Though Sosa scored again off an assist from Raven, it would not be enough, and at the horn, Amherst fell to Trinity 10-7.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst outshot the Bantams in shots on goal, 13-10.

* Though Amherst held a 13-6 advantage in draw controls, turnovers killed their momentum. The Mammoths turned the ball over 19 times against the Bantams.

* Both Jessye Salmon and Marlo Meador played in goal against the Bantams. Meador made 3 saves in the contest.
