CLAREMONT, CA – Four goals from
Caroline Curtis and a second half surge helped the No. 5 Amherst women's lacrosse team to a comeback win on Thursday, March 19. After a dominate win on Tuesday, the Mammoths faced No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer hoping to go 2-0 on their California road trip. They did just that, going on a 7-1 scoring run in the second half to grab an 11-7 victory.
With the win, the Amherst improves to 6-0 overall while the Sagehens drop to 8-1. The Mammoths return home to Gooding Field for their next contest, taking on local opponent Springfield on Wednesday, March 25. The contest against the Pride is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst got on the board first, with Curtis potting her first 2:30 into the game off an assist from
Bridget Finley. That would be all the Mammoths would get in the frame, though, as Pomona-Pitzer put two in the back of the cage to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
*
Bridget Darcy capitalized on a woman-up opportunity, tallying off a pass from Becker to tie the game at 2-2 just 15 seconds into the quarter. However, the Sagehens took control from there, scoring 3 unanswered goals to grab a 5-2 lead. Darcy netted again off an assist from Gaby Sosa with 7:46 left to narrow the deficit to 2, but a Pomona-Pitzer goal restored the lead under a minute later.
* Becker gave her team the momentum back right at the end of the half, scoring with just 18 seconds to go to narrow the deficit to 6-4 at the break and launch the Mammoths' comeback effort.
* Curtis again opened the scoring in the second half, firing a free position shot home. Though the Sagehens got one back to bring the margin back to 2 goals, the sophomore scored her second free position attempt and Finley finished a chance of her own to end the third quarter with the game tied at 7-7.
* Defense was the name of the game for the beginning of the final quarter, with both teams going scoreless for the one of the longest stretches of the day. The Amherst defense locked up the Sagehens, not allowing a shot for the first five minutes of the frame and giving up only one shot the entire period, which sailed wide.
* The Mammoths pulled away with three goals in 2 minutes. Curtis put away her fourth to give her side the lead and controlled the ensuing draw, allowing her team to double the advantage via a Darcy woman-up tally off an assist from
Clara Sosa. Another Amherst draw control, this time from Petersen, drew another card and gave Finley the chance to score. She converted unassisted to widen the lead to 10-7.
* C. Sosa slammed the door on a Sagehen rally with the final marker with 3:53 to go. She converted on a woman-up free position and the defense prevented any more scoring to ice the 11-7 win.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst went 4-8 on free position attempts, while only allowing 2 attempts on the other end.
* Curtis' four goal day is the highest single game total of her career to date and extends her goal-scoring streak to 3 games.
*
Lily Samoska made 7 saves on the day.
