Sosa Sisters Secure #8 Mammoths' 22-3 Success Over Smith

AMHERST, MA – Four goals from Gaby Sosa in her collegiate debut paced the No. 8 Amherst women's lacrosse team to their third straight victory to open the season on Tuesday, March 10. Coming off a momentum-building win against Tufts on Saturday, the Mammoths took on local rival Smith in their first non-conference game of the campaign. Amherst scored early and never looked back, winning 22-3
 
With the win, the Amherst improves to 3-0 on the year while the Bears fall to 3-2. The Mammoths will go on the road for their next NESCAC contest, heading to Lewiston, Maine to face Bates on Saturday, March 14. The game against the Bobcats is scheduled for 12 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 
* The Mammoths started the game with two goals on their first two offensive possessions. The goals came just 18 seconds apart, both in the first 45 seconds of play. Sofia Guttmann opened the scoring unassisted, and Mia Raven doubled the lead with her first of the game off an assist from Kate Becker.

* Guttmann got her second unassisted tally of the game seven minutes later, Bridget Darcy potted off an assist from Becker, and Petersen netted from a Darcy pass to get her first of the day to make it 4. Guttmann sealed a first-quarter hat trick, Clara Sosa netted off Becker's third helper of the game, and Guttman's fourth goal saw Amherst up 8-0 after one frame.

* The flurry of goals continued in the second, with Bridget Finley netting a free-position goal before Smith got their first two goals of the game to narrow the lead to 9-2. The Mammoths responded though, as Caroline Curtis tallied her first of the season with off a crease-roll at the end of the shot clock to push Amherst to 10 goals. Katie Ng potted her first collegiate goal with a bar-down, unassisted marker to send the game to the half at 11-2 Amherst.

* The third quarter was dominated by the Sosa sisters. Clara opened the half with her second of the day. Younger sister Gaby scored next, netting her first collegiate goal after putting her foot in the ground, cutting past the first defender and slashing to the cage past two more to finish the play. The two sisters went back and forth once again, first Clara, and then Gaby, scoring to make it 15-2 with five minutes to go in the third.

* Margeaux Matz opened her 2026 account next, off first year Annie Lopez' first career assist. Gaby Sosa sealed her first career hat trick with her third to end the third quarter at 17-2.
* Anna Hutter's first career goal and tallies by Curtis, G. Sosa, two from Caroline Reichert, and one from Smith accounted for the 22-3 final score.

BY THE NUMBERS:
 
* Amherst outshot the Bears 26-5 in shots on goal and 41-6 overall.
 
* Both G. Sosa and Guttmann scored 4 times, and C. Sosa had three of her own to lead the Mammoths. Kate Becker put up 3 assists in 1 quarter of action.

* Lily Samoska played the first quarter and was not called into action. Jessye Salmon came off the bench and made 1 save, and Marlow Meader made her collegiate debut and stopped 1 attempt.
