Trey Sheppard posted a clean sheet as the Amherst College men's soccer team earned a 3-0 road win over #9 Babson College on Wednesday evening at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Coming off a 3-3 draw with nationally ranked Tufts, the Mammoths survived an early Babson push, struck first midway through the first half and pulled away after the break. Amherst outshot the Beavers 12-6 in the second half, while the defense held Babson to three shots on goal for the match.
With the first top 10 victory of the season for the Mammoths, Amherst moves to 3-3-2 on the season, while Babson falls to 6-2-2.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Babson nearly opened the scoring in the 18th minute, when Will Boecher's shot came back off the post. Sheppard then denied James Cooper moments later to keep the match scoreless.
- Amherst made the Beavers pay three minutes later. Judelson and Riley Priddy combined to set up Wilkey, who finished at the 20:51 mark for a 1-0 lead that held through halftime
- The Mammoths doubled their advantage just over two minutes into the second half. Timothy Chow set up Judelson, who scored at 47:17 to make it 2-0.
- Amherst kept the pressure on, earning three corner kicks in a seven-minute span and forcing Babson into a series of blocks. Akanbo put the game out of reach in the 67th minute, finishing a feed from Mohammed Nuhu and Priddy at the 66:39 mark for his first goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.
- Babson's second goalkeeper, Pietro Arcoria, made three saves after entering in the 72nd minute, turning away late chances from Luka Ohadike, Nuhu and Lucas Shotts, while the Amherst back line saw out the clean sheet.
BY THE NUMBERS:
Amherst held a 16-11 advantage in total shots and placed seven attempts on target to Babson's three. Priddy led the Mammoths with two assists, while Judelson finished with a goal and an assist. Chow and Nuhu added an assist apiece, giving Amherst five assists on its three goals. Wilkey and Judelson each recorded their third goals of the season. Sheppard went the full 90 minutes and made two saves for the shutout. Will Devall made one save before giving way to Arcoria, who finished with three. Babson earned four corner kicks to Amherst's three. Each side committed nine fouls and was shown two yellow cards, with
Sam Davis and Nuhu cautioned for Amherst.
