#19 Mammoths Come Up Short Against Springfield, 66–70

SPRINGFIELD, MA —

The Amherst College women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought road contest on Tuesday night, falling 66–70 to Springfield College. After controlling much of the game and building an 11-point lead in the first half, the Mammoths saw Springfield take the lead in the fourth quarter and were unable to complete a late comeback in the final seconds, as Springfield held on for the win.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amherst came out strong in the opening quarter, going on a 5–0 run to start the game. The Mammoths finished the first quarter leading 18–13, setting the tone early.

  • In the second quarter, Amherst extended its lead to 11 points with the help of back-to-back three-pointers from Annie McCarthy. Springfield responded quickly with a run of their own midway through the quarter, cutting into the deficit. By halftime, the Pride had trimmed the lead to just one, sending the teams into halftime with Amherst narrowly ahead, 34–33.

  • The third quarter featured a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading baskets and momentum. Amherst managed to regain some separation late in the quarter and entered the fourth quarter holding a 53–49 advantage.

  • Springfield took control in the final quarter, converting timely jump shots and three-pointers to swing the momentum. Midway through the fourth, the Pride had built a nine-point lead. Amherst responded with defensive stops and second-chance opportunities, cutting the deficit to just two points with seven seconds remaining after a crucial offensive rebound and putback by Sylvia Liddle.

  • The Mammoths attempted to force a turnover in the closing seconds but were forced to foul. A Springfield guard converted both free throws to extend the lead to four. Amherst was unable to capitalize on their final possession, and Springfield closed out the 70–66 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Annie McCarthy led the Mammoths with 22 points, knocking down five three-pointers.

  • Amherst outshot Springfield from the free-throw line, shooting 78.9% (15–19) compared to the Pride's 64.7% (11–17).

UP NEXT:

  • With the loss, Amherst moves to a 9–2 overall record.

  • The Mammoths will travel to Lewiston, Maine, to face Bates College on Friday, January 9 at 7 p.m. for their first NESCAC game of the season.
