Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#10 Mammoths' Win Streak Snapped By Conn, 12-10

NEW LONDON, CT. – The No. 10 Amherst College women's lacrosse team saw their six-game win streak snapped on Wednesday, April 9, suffering tough loss against Connecticut College. Hitting the road once more riding a six-game win streak, the Mammoths just couldn't get over the hump, dropping a battle to the Camels, 12-10, in a mid-week NESCAC contest.

With the loss, the Mammoths fell to 8-3 overall while Conn. College improved to 7-6. Next up for Amherst is a date with Bates on Saturday, April 12 on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium where they will look to get back in the win column. The game against the Bobcats also serves as the team's Senior Day, with a ceremony honoring the eight members of the Class of 2025 beginning about 10 minutes before the scheduled noon start.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths wasted no time seizing the lead, with Emily Petersen driving to the cage from the left and netting on the team's opening possession of the game to make it 1-0. The Camels scored to tie it two minutes later, but Amherst took just six seconds to respond: after a Petersen draw control, the junior passed to a wide-open Mia Raven, who sped to the net and finished her first shot of the game. However, Conn had an answer once again, taking just 45 seconds to tie it at two. They took their first lead of the game at 3-2 to close a furious first five minutes of play in which five goals were scored.

* This stood in stark contrast to the next 12:30 of gametime, in which the teams found themselves at a stalemate: neither team was able to tally until the 2:23 mark of the second quarter. The Mammoths were the ones to break the ice, with Raven potting a free-position chance to even the score. The next goal also belonged to Amherst: Sofia Guttmann beat her defender to the right to and rifled a shot into the net give her team back the lead. The Camels evened the game at 4-4 with a free-position shot with 8:07 to go in the half.

* Rachel Rogers was the next player to put one into the back of the cage, taking a free-position attempt towards the net, switching to her left hand, and putting a shot over the Camels netminder's head to reestablish a one-goal lead. Raven sealed her hattrick to give the Mammoths a 6-4 cushion heading into the half, sprinting past her defender to the inside and finishing despite getting tripped in the process.

* Two early goals from Conn tied the game at 6-6 just two minutes into the second half. The Conn run stopped there for the moment, as Kate Becker lobbed a skip pass over the goal to Clara Sosa, who drove to the cage and fired one home to retake the lead halfway through the third. The Camels evened the game a minute later, and no one would score again until :29 remained in the quarter. Morgan Lebek quick-sticked a Becker pass from X into the back of the cage to put the Mammoths up 8-7 heading into the final quarter.

* The Camels tied the game to open the fourth, though Petersen got her second of the game with a catch-and-shoot goal off a pass from Raven behind the net to give her team another one-goal advantage. This is when the home team went on another run, knotting the game 9-all before scoring two more put the Mammoths in a tough spot, down two with six minutes to go.

* Draw specialist Elizabeth Rose secured draw that allowed Petersen to provide a response, sealing another hattrick off an over-the-goal feed from Becker to cut the deficit to one. But Conn put one away on a man-up opportunity to restore their lead to two and they would not get any closer as the Mammoths fell in a heartbreaker 12-10.
