Moravek Ks 10, but on the wrong end of Pride No-Hitter as Mammoths swept by Springfield

AMHERST, Mass. – Despite an impressive pitching effort from junior Abby Moravek in Wednesday's second game, in which she struck out 10 batters and kept the contest scoreless through seven innings, the Amherst College softball team dropped a pair of games against Springfield College, losing the opener 12-3 in six innings and the nightcap 1-0 in eight innings of play.

Amherst's record fell to 12-13 following the losses, while Springfield improved to 17-9 overall. The Mammoths will host Trinity College next in a doubleheader on Saturday (April 19th), where they'll face the Bantams at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on the Amherst Softball Field.

Game Two: Springfield College 1, Amherst College 0 (8 inn.)

*Moravek opened the contest with impressive work from within the circle, sticking out all three batters in the first inning and two more in the second.

*Springfield threatened to score in the top of the fifth as first-year Katie Manzone advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the runner's momentum was stunted as Mammoth third sacker Lulu Leppard snared the inning's third out.

*The contest remained scoreless until Springfield plated a runner in the top of the eighth. The international tiebreaker was put into effect, and Springfield junior Lyndsay Donston pinch ran, advanced to third on a double down the left-field line, then crossed the plate on a fielding error for what turned out to be the game's only run.

*Junior Abby Kong harnessed some momentum for the Mammoths as she made her way around the diamond in the final inning, reaching third on a bunt from Torres Werra. Still, two strikeouts ended her run and concluded the contest 1-0.

*Amherst had no hits. Moravek allowed 1 run on 8 hits and struck out 10 Springfield batters.

* Springfield's Lily McCauliffe threw an 8-inning, complete-game no-hitter in the win, walking one and striking out four.

Game One: Springfield College 12, Amherst College 3 (6 inn.)

*Springfield got on the board first in the opening inning as a single up the middle from junior Carissa Pecchia plated junior Amelia DeRosa the first run of the contest, 1-0.

*After reaching on a single, sophomore Heidi Li made her way around the diamond and crossed the plate as first-year Leppard smashed a double to center field to equalize the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

*The next three innings were a run-less affair as strong fielding from both sides slowed the momentum. In the top of the fourth, Leppard made an impressive diving catch behind the foul line to notch an out. Senior Dani Torres Werra followed up by striking out the next batter. Finally, first-year May Mishima caught a fly ball to grab the final out of the stanza.

*The Pride sped into the lead with a seven-run fifth inning. Pecchia added two runs for the visitors with a double to left center, while graduate student Callie Gendron tallied a third with a double down the right-field line. The visitors plated four more runs with a double-RBI hit to right field and a double-RBI single to finish the rally up 8-1.

*Amherst weakened the margin in the bottom of the fifth as first-year Abby Rebhan hit a home run to left field to plate two runs for the Mammoths, 8-3.

*Springfield extended their lead to 12-3 in the top of the sixth. Two doubles to left field and a fielder's choice added four points for the visitors and concluded the game with a mercy rule decision.

*Amherst had 7 hits as Rebhan went 1-3 with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Leppard went 2-3 with two hits, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored. Li, junior Olivia Aitkin, and sophomore Emma Nordstrom each had 1 hit.
