McCarthy, Pahl spur Mammoths' rally past Bates in NESCAC Quarterfinal

AMHERST, Mass. – Trailing Bates by 15 points mid-way through the third quarter, the Amherst College women's basketball team rallied behind Annie McCarthy and Reagan Pahl, taking its NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal , 61-51, over the Bobcats Saturday afternoon on Hixon Court in LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths (19-6) will travel to Maine next weekend for a semifinal showdown with top-seeded Bowdoin Saturday, March 1st, at 2 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst's high-scoring runs in the latter portion of quarters three and four resulted in the Mammoths moving from trailing by 15 points to a 10-point victory.

* The Bobcats got a jump on the Mammoths early into quarter one. The Mammoths were down 7-0 with seven minutes and 45 seconds remaining on the clock, but things turned around when Elizabeth Cain sank a layup in the paint. In the three minutes that followed, Barach sank two layups and a three-pointer, and Laura Mendell tacked on two free throw points to put a combined 11 points to Bates' three. The Mammoths seized the lead, 11-10, with four minutes and 48 seconds remaining on the clock. The Mammoths and Bobcats went back and forth for the minute that followed until the Mammoths began to break away after two points from Mendell and a three-pointer from Pahl. Bates crept back up and tied the game with 47 seconds remaining on the clock and seized the lead by one point, 21-20, at the conclusion of the first quarter. 

* A layup from Sylvia Liddle and a three-pointer from McCarthy tied the score, 25-25, with 6 minutes and 52 seconds left in quarter two. Bates retook the lead, but Amherst tied the game once more, 29-29, with four minutes and nine seconds remaining. Bates managed to break away from the Mammoths at the end of the second quarter, sending Amherst into halftime with a 34-29 disadvantage.  

* Bates drove the score up to 44-29 by the six-minute mark in quarter three, but Amherst had a strong comeback. In the second half of quarter three, the Mammoths had a 13-point run without allowing the Bobcats to score a single point. Pahl's three-pointer, Barach's free throws and layups, Anna Tranum's layup, and McCarthy's layup were enough to put the Mammoths within two points of the Bobcats, 44-42, entering the final quarter. 

* McCarthy sank a three-pointer to seize the lead from the Bobcats at the start of quarter four. Barach followed with a layup, but the Bobcats put four points on the board to retake the lead once more. Amherst once again began an incredible run in the final four minutes of quarter four, putting 14 points to Bates' three. McCarthy accounted for nine, and Pahl accounted for five. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

*McCarthy, Barach, and Pahl each scored in the double-digits with 17, 15, and 13 points, respectively.

* Pahl and McCarthy earned a combined 18 out of the Mammoths' 39 rebounds.

* The Mammoths went 21 of 25 free throw attempts,  an 84% success rate.
