AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's basketball team rallied to victory behind a strong second quarter to defeat rival Williams College, 63-49, WEdnesday night in on Hixon Court in LeFrak Gymnasium.
The win was the 20th consecutive home win over Williams for Amherst and the 450th Amherst win of head coach
G.P. Gromacki's tenure at the institution.
The Mammoths (12-4, 2-2) will face Hamilton College in conference play at the LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday at 2 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths' run in the latter part of quarter two ensured victory over the Purple Cows, with
Laura Mendell,
Kori Barach,
Elizabeth Cain, and
Maya Cwalina racking up a combined 13 points.
* Amherst ceded seven points in the first six and a half minutes of the game but had a strong close to quarter one, scoring 11 points in the final three and a half minutes. The Mammoths ended quarter one trailing Williams by 4 points, 15-11.
* The Mammoths gained massive momentum in quarter two following the decisive thirteen-point run. Mendell began the Mammoths' run with a layup at five minutes and 18 seconds. Her layup was followed by two free throws from Barach, a jumper from Cain, and a layup from Cwalina. Mendell continued to rack up points for the Mammoths, scoring four free throw points and an additional layup in the final five minutes. The Mammoths concluded quarter two with a 20-31 lead.
* The Mammoths scored 20 points to Williams' 17 to increase their lead in quarter three.
Annie McCarthy netted two three-pointers at nine minutes and 34 seconds and six minutes and 36 seconds, respectively, in the third quarter.
* Barach, Cwalina,
Macie Nugent, and Cain scored a combined 12 points in quarter four to secure victory over the Purple Cows.

* McCarthy, Mendell, Cwalina, and Cain each scored in the double-digits, with 12, 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. Cwalina added 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Can had a career-high 4 blocks in the win as well.
* Amherst scored 11 out of 13 free throws attempted, with an 84.6% success rate.
