AMHERST, MASS.-- The Amherst College Women's basketball team defeated Bates College in NESCAC play Friday night in LeFrak Gymnasium following double-digit scoring from
Kori Barach,
Annie McCarthy, and
Maya Cwalina at 16, 15, and 12 points, respectively.

The Mammoths (10-2, 1-0) will face Lehman College in an away game at the APEX Main Gym in the Bronx, NY, Monday at 5 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths got a jump on the Bobcats early in the first quarter. McCarthy scored back-to-back three-pointers, two free throws, and a layup to give the Mammoths an eight-point lead over the Bobcats, 10-2. Barach and McCarthy further increased the Mammoths' lead in the final 30 seconds of quarter one, with Barach scoring a three-pointer and McCarthy scoring three points on free throws.

* Bates crept back up in terms of score during the second quarter, trailing the Mammoths by only one point with two minutes and 52 seconds on the clock. Once the score reached 32-31, the Mammoths responded with a five-point run to retain the lead. Regan Pahl snagged a rebound and assisted Barach in a layup to increase the score to 34-31. Then, with 1 minute and 44 seconds remaining,
Anna Tranum netted a free throw and a layup to increase the Mammoths' lead margin to six points.

* The Mammoths re-entered the game after half-time with strong momentum, starting quarter three with a six-point run following layups from Cwalina and
Laura Mendell and a jumper from Barach. The Bobcats got within two points of the Mammoths with 4 minutes and 58 seconds on the clock before Cwalina scored a jumper, free throw, and layup consecutively to push the Mammoths to a 48-41 lead.

* The Mammoths continued to battle in quarter four, with a strong close in the final 18 seconds. Mendell racked up three points off free throws, and Pahl followed suit, earning two points from the charity stripe to account for the 11-point victory.
