AMHERST, Mass. – Senior
Abby Schwartz and sophomore
Precious Novidzro scored goals for the Mammoths Saturday to take down Connecticut College on Hitchcock Field.
* Amherst now holds a 2-0 overall record (1-0 in the NESCAC) for the season.
* Up next: after winning their first two games of the season, the Mammoths will drive up the road to face Smith College in Northampton, Mass. Sunday at 3 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* In a similar fashion to Tuesday's game versus WPI, Amherst dominated the opening part of the game. Despite Conn's high lined offside trap and aggressive physical play, Amherst maintained their possession style of play throughout the first half.
* Amherst's style was rewarded in the 14th minute with a goal from
Abby Schwartz— her first of the season. After a ball from senior
Carter Hollingsworth was played into
Patience Kum, Kum volleyed the ball behind the defense for Schwartz, who ran onto it and found the side netting to put Amherst up 1-0.
* In the 19th minute, the Mammoths had another dangerous chance off of a corner kick. Junior Ella (LJ) Johnson took the kick, and after a defensive header by Conn., junior
Brooke Ingemi settled the ball and fired a quick pass to senior
Fiona Bernet, who took a touch and shot that went just over the crossbar.
* In the second half, Amherst came out with more high intensity, and a very energetic high press that led to many turnovers in the Mammoths favor. In the 13th minute of the second period, Hollingsworth played another ball in behind for Kum to run onto and penetrate the Camels back line. After driving down the right flank, Kum crossed the ball into the path of
Precious Novidzro, who buried the ball in the back of the net in one touch.
* With four minutes to go in the match, Conn's Blessing Kieh had a dangerous breakaway opportunity, but strong efforts from senior goalkeeper
Mika Fisher and captain center back
Charlotte Huang maintained the shutout for the Mammoths.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths took 13 shots (5 on goal) while the Camels took 8 shots (5 on goal). Amherst also won the corner kick battle 8-0. Fisher made five saves for the Mammoths.
