#25 Mammoths Score Late Equalizer, Tie #20 Babson

BABSON PARK, MA. – A goal from senior Niall Murphy salvaged a draw for the No. 25 Amherst College men's soccer on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Taking on No. 20 Babson on Hartwell-Rodgers Field, the Mammoths battled the Beavers to a 1-1 final score.

With the tie the Mammoths move to 3-1-2 this season, while the Beavers are now 3-0-5 on the year. The Mammoths will look to get a win when they return to NESCAC play this weekend, taking on Bates on Saturday, Sept. 28. The contest against the Bobcats will begin at 2 pm.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game's first real chance came in the 14th minute by way of Wyatt McCarthy, whose header seemed destined for the top corner but was miraculously saved by the Babson goalkeeper.

* Goaltender Trey Sheppard was solid between the posts in his first collegiate start,  keeping the score level through 45 minutes with a diving save on a Babson header in the 35th.

* Amherst again threatened early in the second half, with a volley from Obed Opoku flying just wide and a Murphy strike clanging against the post to keep the visitors from opening the scoring.

* However, the Beavers found the back of the net with 9:31 remaining. After Sheppard was called for a foul on a Babson player, he saved the initial spot-kick but was beaten on the rebound, and Babson took a 1-0 lead. This kicked off a chaotic final ten minutes in which the many of the game's best chances were created by both teams.

* The Mammoths kept the pressure on after conceding, though, and were able to equalize just three minutes later off a free kick. McCarthy stepped up to take it, and his ball found the head of Simon Kalinauskas. The center back flicked a header to Murphy, whose first-touch shot tucked inside the left post to bring the teams back on level terms.

* Despite two final-minute chances, Amherst was unable to score again, and the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst led 12-9 in shots taken and 10-0 on corner kicks during the contest, while the Beavers led in shots on goal 7-3.

* Sheppard made five saves in goal for the Mammoths.
