SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --
Dani Torres Werra threw a complete-game 5-hitter and had two hits to lead the Amherst College softball team to a 3-1 win over Springfield College at Potter Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Mammoths dropped Wednesday's opener, 15-2, in a mercy-ruled 5-inning final. Amherst is now 7-18 overall while the Pride moved to 20-6-1 overall. Amherst is at Hamilton Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon before hosting rival Williams at the Amherst Softball Field Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
Game 2, Amherst 3, Springfield 1
* The Mammoths took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Annalise Knop drew a lead-off walk and was sacrificed to second by
Olivia Aitkin. Emily Nordstrom singled to center as Knop took third. After a pop out for the second out, Torres Werra came through a single to center to give the Mammoths a 1-0 lead.
* Torres Werra escaped a jam in the bottom of the inning after giving up back-to-back singles. She fanned the next batter, then induced to fly outs to end the threat. That was the start of the Amherst junior retiring nine batters in a row.
* In the Amherst fourth, Torres Werra led off and reached on an error.
Sadie Pool followed with a double to left, putting Mammoths on second and third with no outs. Amandis Castro ripped a single to left that scored Torres Werra for a 2-0 lead.
Heidi Li followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Pool with the third run.
* Springfield immediately threatened to get erase the three-run Amherst lead as two singles around an out put runners on first and second. Nordstrom then threw out a runner trying to steal and pop up ended the threat.
* The Pride mustered a big threat in the seventh after Torres Werra had retired seven in a row. An error to open the frame put a runner on first. After a force out, a double scored a run. However, Torres Werra induced a pop out to second and a foul out to third to end the game.
* Torres Werra improved to 3-6, scattering five hits over seven innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out two. Knopp was 2 for 3 with a run scored while Torres Werra was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Game 1, Springfield 15, Amherst 2 (5 inn.)
* The Pride scored two in the first and three in the second to build a 5-0 lead.
* In the Amherst third, lead-off hitter
Jenna Holmes smacked a double.. Knop followed with a single that scored Holmes to make a 5- game. The Pride then exploded for five runs in third and five more in the fourth.
* The second Mammoth run came in the top of the fifth. Holmes ripped a one-out single and took second when
Heidi Li walked with two outs. Nordstrom followed the Li walk by reaching on an error that allowed Holmes to score.
* Holmes finished 2 for 2 at the plate. Knop was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Randi Finkelstein had the other Amherst hit.
