AMHERST, MA. – A five goal afternoon from
Sofia Guttmann delivered the No. 16-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team their fourth-straight win, and fifth over a ranked opponent this season on Sunday, April 14. Taking on No. 20 Babson College on Pratt Field, the Mammoths bested the Beavers in 15-14 in a tight game.
With the victory, the Mammoths improved to 8-5 this season, while Beavers fell to 11-2. The Mammoths will return to NESCAC play next weekend, taking the field for Senior Day on Saturday, April 20. They will face Tufts looking to pick up another NESCAC win, taking on the Jumbos at 1 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The first quarter began with a Beavers goal, but the Mammoths fought back to tie the game at one-apiece. After a Rachel Rodgers shot hit the pipe,
Mia Raven collected the rebound and slipped through defenders to score. They went up 2-1 by way of a Guttmann free-position shot, but Babson would tie the game again just a minute later.
* It was here that the Mammoths went on their first scoring run of the game, netting three straight. First it was Raven, who scored again on a free-position opportunity. Then it was Becker tallying on a crease-roll, and Guttman shoveling a man-up free-position shot home. Though Babson ended the quarter with a goal, the Mammoths went into the second up 5-3.
* Babson again got the first goal of the quarter, this time narrowing the lead to one. In response, the Mammoths went on another three-goal run, this time by way of a
Bridget Finley quick-stick, a free-position goal from
Clara Sosa, and a laser from Guttmann, to take a 8-4 lead.
* However, though the Beavers were down, they were not out. Over the course of the next 20 minutes of play, the visitors outscored the Mammoths 6-0, with Amherst failing behind 10-8 heading into a crucial final quarter of play.
* Entering the fourth frame with their backs against the wall, the Mammoths again battled back. A point-blank tally from Finley and two from Guttmann --- one free-position and one in the run of play --- canceled out one from Babson to tie the game at 11-11 with 8:30 to go.
* The teams traded goals over the next three-plus minutes of game time. Goals from Becker, who converted a face-cut to the goal-mouth off a pass from Raven, and Raven herself, left the game tied once more, this time at 13-13 with just over five minutes to go.
* Entering crunch-time facing and an immense amount of pressure, this young Mammoths team delivered. Finley, who played hero against Bates the day before, again came up big, scoring the Mammoths' final two goals of the game and put it out of reach. Her first came off a free-position opportunity, and her second, which put the Mammoths up 15-13 with 90 seconds go, off a feed from Becker. And though the Beavers put one in to narrow the lead to one, Amherst held on for the final minute to take the 15-14 win.
BY THE NUMBERS:
