Mammoths served double dip by Smith, 5-0 & 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Amherst College softball team found runs hard to come by Wednesday as it dropped a doubleheader to visiting Smith College, 5-0 & 1-0 , at the Amherst Softball Field.

The Mammoths fell 5-14 on the season while the Pioneers improved to 10-7-1.  The Mammoths are back in action Saturday for a doubleheader at Bowdoin College beginning at 12 p.m.

Game 1: Smith 5, Amherst 0

*  The Mammoths biggest highlight came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. With Emma Nordstrom on first via a walk, senior Randi Finkelstein laced a single through the hole betwene short and third to break up Pioneer pitcher Emilie Doty's no-hit bid.

* Doty finished off her 1-hit shutout by retiring the next batter on a fly to left field. She walked just three and struck out six t improve to 6-3 on the season.

* Amherst hurler Dani Torres Werra blanked the Pioneers through three innings, but gave up two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth. She took the loss, falling to 2-5 on the season, giving up eight hits over six frames. She did not walk a batter and fanned two.

Game 2: Smith 1, Amherst 0

* Smith's  Lucy Helms and Amherst's Abby Moravek engaged in a scoreless pitcher's dual through six scoreless frames.

* The script was flipped a bit as Amherst knocked out six hits and had the better scoring chances through six.

* In the Amherst second, Nordstrom led off with a single and with one out, Torres Werra knocked another base hit. After a strike out, Mammoth first-year Anna Primozic beat out an infield chopper to short to load the bases, but Helms got Moravek on a grounder to second to end the threat.

* In the Mammoths' third, Olivia Aitken and Nordstrom laced back-to-back to-out singles, but Sadie Pool was retired on an infield pop up to end the frame.

* After a Primozic base hit with two outs in the fourth, Helms retired the next nine Mammoths consecutively until she walked Moravek with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the seventh.

* Moravek had a no-hitter for three innings and a 1-hitter entering the top of the seventh. Helms worked a lead-off walk out of her counterpart and with two outs, took second on a wild pitch. Lexi Balam then slammed a two-strike pitch the opposite way and it fell for an RBI-double, giving Smith the lead 1-0.

* Moravek worked that two-out walk from Helms in the bottom of the frame, but Heidi Li's fly to center was caught, with a diving attempt, by Molly Taketa, to end the game.

* Nordstrom and Primozic were each 2 for 3 in the loss.

* Moravek pitched a complete game seven-inning effort. She allowed only two hits and the one run but fell to -5 on the season.
