#19 Mammoths Hang On, Upset #11 Stevens 11-10

AMHERST, MA. – Three goals each from Clara Sosa and Sofia Guttmann helped the No. 19 Amherst College women's lacrosse team upset No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 30. Facing a previously-undefeated opponent, the Mammoths did not fold under the pressure as they bested the Ducks 11-10.

With the victory, the Mammoths improved to 4-4 this season, while the Ducks fell to 7-1. The Mammoths will conclude their four game home stand on Wednesday, April 3, taking on Little Three Rival Wesleyan. The contest against the Cardinals will begin at 6 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Continuing a recent trend, the Mammoths opened the game with two straight goals. The first was netted by Guttmann, who beat her defender with a hesitation move before firing past the Ducks' keeper for the 1-0 lead. Guttmann extended the lead to 2-0 just minutes later with a free-position goal.

* However, Stevens stormed back with three straight goals to retake the lead at 3-2 with just under five minutes to go in the opening frame. They held onto that lead for the remainder of the quarter, and the Mammoths entered the second down by one.

* Two big saves from sophomore goaltender Jessye Salmon and staunch defense kept the Stevens off the scoreboard and the Mammoths within one. This allowed Amherst to capitalize, with a bouncing, side-arm shot from Mary Gum finding its way past the Ducks netminder before Kate Becker got her first of the day to retake the lead at 4-3.

* After a brief stoppage in play, the Mammoths set up their offense and converted for the third time in the quarter, with Bridget Finley netting from close range off an assist from Sosa. Sosa got one of her own just seconds later, getting fouled as she shot but still converting on a tough look to increase the advantage to three. Another Sosa goal was waved off, but nonetheless, the Mammoths went into halftime up 6-3.

* Amherst got the second half scoring going early with a free position shot from Emma Crotty. Immediately after, an impressive save from Salmon, in which she stuffed a shot from point-blank range, led to another goal from Gum that gave Amherst an 8-3 lead.

* While the Ducks stopped the run of six unanswered moments later, the Mammoth offense kept rolling. It was Sosa who netted once again, beating her defender on an outside-in move to get in on goal. A break in the action ensued, with neither team scoring until just under two minutes remained in the quarter when Stevens tallied to make it 9-5; the score remained there entering the final period.

* The Ducks opened the scoring with a quick-stick tally to narrow the Amherst led to three, and quickly got another to make it 9-7 with 11:31 to go in the game. While Sosa had something to say about that, scoring another goal to restore the three-goal lead, Stevens responded with two more scores, and the teams entered clutch time with the game at 10-9. With the game on the line, Guttmann stepped up to the plate, netting her third of the game to give the Mammoths a little bit a breathing room.

* A huge backhanded save from Salmon with two minutes to go initially prevented the Ducks from closing the gap, but they would find a way past the sophomore with 35 seconds to go to again draw within one. And a late Mammoths' yellow card put them at a disadvantage with the game on the line. However, a big ground ball from Crotty shut the door on the Ducks and sealed an 11-10 Amherst victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Sosa paced the Mammoths offensively, with two assists to go along with three goals against the Ducks. She currently leads the team with 14 goals and is second on the team in points with 19.

* Salmon's play kept the Mammoths in front all day. She made six saves, both in the run of play and on free-position opportunities, and her amazing effort proved to be the difference between a win and a loss.

* Junior attack Sydney Kang saw her first action this season following a season-ending knee injury that ended her 2023 season. She recorded one caused turnover in her return to the field.
