Earlier in the day, the Mammoths dropped a 7-5 decision to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The win over Buffalo State improved the Mammoths' record to 1-3 this season.Â
Tuesday, Amherst will face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 9 a.m. and the University of Wisconsin-Steven Point at 11:15 a.m. back at Legends Way.
Amherst vs.
Buffalo State:
* Amherst jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Li doubled to left center and stole third. Torres Werra walked and stole second. First-year
Emma Nordstrom drove a single up the middle that scored Li. With two outs, Finkelstein lined an RBI-single to left for the two-run advantage.Â
* The Mammoths added a run in the third when Nordstrom led off with a double down the left-field line and senior
Sadie Pool singled. Finkelstein then grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Pool at second but allowed Nordstrom to score for a 3-0 lead.
* A four-run fourth inning helped the Mammoths put the game away.
Abby Moravek and
America Rangel drew walks to start the frame. Li laid down a bunt single that loaded the bases with no outs. After a double play, Nordstrom and Pool drew back-to-back walks that forced in a run. Finkelstein was then hit by a pitch for a 5-0 lead.
Anna Primozic capped the uprising with a two-run single to second base that made it 7-0.Â
* One run in the top of the fifth enacted the 8-run mercy rule. With two outs, Li singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error.Â
* Torres Werra made it stand up, retiring the final 10 batters she faced. She allowed just a second-inning single, did not walk a batter and struck out eight.Â
Amherst vs.
UWEC
* Trailing 5-0 after two-and-a-half innings, the Mammoths got back into the game with a three-run third inning. Torres Werra led off with a single and she scooted to third when Primozic's grounder resulted in a throwing error. After an out,
Dylan Briggs lined an RBI-double to left. Nordstrom came up as a pinch-hitter and grounded out to second, scoring one run. A second run scored on an error on the play and Amherst was within two at 5-3.Â
* Amherst made it 5-4 in the fourth when Olivia Aitken roped an RBI-double down the right-field line to score Rangel, who reached on a fielder's choice after Li had reach on an error.Â
* Down 6-4, the Mammoths scored their final run in the sixth when Rangel reached on a two-base error and scored on Torres Werra's singled to right.Â
* In the bottom of the seventh the Mammoths put two runners on with two outs, but could not score.Â
* Nordstrom hit 2 for 3 with an RBI. Torres Werra was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
* Briggs threw six innings of relief, allowing five hits while walking just one. She did not strike out a batter.
