#18 Mammoths fall short to Emory in Elite 8 battle, 1-0

DUBUQUE, IA. -- A fantastic postseason run by the Amherst College women's soccer team fell just short Sunday as the Mammoths were defeated 1-0, by Emory University in an NCAA Div. III Tournament quarterfinal played at Rock Bowl Stadium on the campus of Loras College.

Amherst's season concludes with a 14-2-6 record. It was the first visit to the national quarterfinals for a Mammoth team since 2011. After winning their third consecutive NESCAC conference championship, Amherst had NCAA wins over SUNY-New Paltz, Rochester University and the Illinois Insitute of Technology prior to Sunday's loss.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* In the game's opening seconds, Amherst nearly stunned the Rock Bowl. Alyssa Huynh sent a beautiful through ball down the left side that Abby Schwartz raced onto, firing a shot on net that Emory goalkeeper Sophia Garcia made a diving stop of. Sophia Haynes collected the rebound and fired it on goal, where it was deflected by an Eagle defender. The officials ruled Haynes' shot had hit the arm of said defender and awarded a penalty kick to Amherst just 35 seconds into the contest. Patience Kum stepped into the spotlight, but her shot was saved by a leaping Garcia ad the game remained scoreless.

*  The teams traded several more chances in the first half before the Eagles were able to break through in the 38th minute. Mikayla Camp saved a ball from going out of bounds on the right sideline at the endline, made a move around a Mammoth defense and as she approached the goal slid the ball back to the six where Madison Teng ran onto it and redirected it into the lower right-hand corner of the net with just under eight minutes left in the half.

* The Mammoths almost found the equalizer three minutes later with a shot from 20-yards out from Katie Pedersen but another great save from Garcia preserved the 1-0 lead.

* Emory was able to keep the Mammoths off the board in the first 25 minutes of the second half, but the Mammoths began to create chances over the final 20 minutes. With 1:17 to go, Kate Quigley made a couple of deft moves around defenders 25 yards out and rocketed a shot ticketed for the right-side upper 90, but Garcia flung her right hand up in the air and tipped the shot over the crossbar.

* With 5:54 remaining, Schwartz had an opportunity at the top of the box, but her shot went just wide of the right post.

* The Mammoths were able to rip four shots in the closing minutes but none were able to cut through the Emory defense.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths had the edge in shots (17-16), shots on goal (9-5) and corner kicks (8-3).

* Garcia made a career-high 8 saves for Emory. Mika Fisher had three for the Mammoths.
