Coletti Brace Helps #18 Mammoths Ground Bantams 5-0

HARTFORD, CT. – A brace from first-year Caroline Coletti delivered a NESCAC victory for the No. 18 Amherst College women's soccer team on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The Mammoths finished their regular season in style, putting five goals past the Bantams and keeping the shutout, 5-0.

With the win, the Mammoths end the 2024 regular season with a 9-1-5 overall record, including 6-1-4 in NESCAC play, while Trinity ends 2024 with a 3-8-3 record. Amherst's work this season has earned them the fourth seed in the NESCAC Tournament, with play starting this Saturday, Nov. 2 at home against fifth-seeded Middlebury. Their kickoff time on Hitchcock field will be announced shortly.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths had all of the ball in the game's first ten minutes, and saw that dominance pay dividends just 9:34 into the contest. Junior Ella Johnson received the ball on the left wing and played the ball down the line for Precious Novidzro. The sophomore put on the fancy footwork, beating her defender down the endline before rifling a shot past the Bantam keeper from a seemingly impossible angle to give the away side the 1-0 lead.

* Amherst had most of the momentum until about the 25-minute mark, but the Mammoths netted against the run of play to take a 2-0 lead and to flip the flow of the game back to their side. Jessica Lomo played a ball to the feet of Halle Hanna, who was taken down on the right side of the box to earn a penalty kick. Hanna stayed composed despite the pressure (and some heckling from the crowd) and converted at the spot to widen the advantage with her fourth goal of the season.

* Even though they took that advantage into the half, the Mammoths did not rest on their laurels, scoring again just seven minutes into the second half. Fiona Bernet sent a perfect free kick from just beyond the midfield line that clanged off the crossbar and right to Coletti. The first-year left no doubt from there, slotting the ball into the open net to make it 3-0.

* Senior forward Abby Schwartz got her third goal in two games just over ten minutes later off a long ball from midfielder Katie Pederson. Pederson looped a ball over the Trinity back line that bounced perfectly for Schwartz, who was able to tap a header past the onrushing goalkeeper and tap-in for the 4-0 lead.

* Coletti closed the scoring with her second tally of the game, the seventh of her rookie season. After receiving the ball from Novidzro, she beat her defender down the right sideline, cut inside, and fired a shot that deflected off of a Bantam and into the net. That goal sealed her second multi-goal game of the year and a 5-0 win for the Mammoths.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths outshot the Bantams 18-9, with eight of those shots on frame. They also led in corners 9-1.

* The Mammoths' five goal performance against the Bantams was their second time scoring five or more goals in the past three games (6 versus Sarah Lawrence on Oct. 20).

* Mika Fisher got the start in net for the Mammoths and made four saves on the day. Katya Besch also saw time in goal for Amherst, and the two seniors combined to keep the Mammoths' tenth shutout of the season.
