BOSTON, MA. – A three-goal second half saw No. 14 Amherst College men's soccer extend their win streak to five on Saturday, Oct. 12. Taking on out-of-conference opponent Emerson during their NESCAC bye weekend, the Mammoths took advantage of a stellar second half to defeat the Lions by a score of 3-0.
With the win, the Mammoths improve to 8-1-2 this season, while Emerson drops to 4-7-2 in 2024. Amherst will return to the field in just three days, facing perennial power Tufts In a battle of nationally-ranked NESCAC squads. The game, in which both teams have everything to play for, is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 15, with kickoff at 3:30pm.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* It took the Mammoths a little time to settle into the game, with the majority of their chances in the first 45 minutes coming in the last ten minutes of the half. After a back-and-forth first 30 minutes in which both teams got looks at goal, Amherst outshot the Lions 4-0 in the last 10 minutes of the half to go into the break with momentum despite the 0-0 score.
* Their persistence to goal paid off just seven minutes into the second half, with senior
Niall Murphy finding the back of the net for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
* After the first goal, the game seemed to resume a similar pace, but the Emerson was not able to deny the Mammoths for long. A foul in the 18-yard box gave
Mohammed Nuhu a penalty-kick opportunity to stretch the lead. The sophomore converted from the spot, stretching the Amherst lead to 2-0 with 14 minutes to go.
* A second goal in five minutes all but put the Lions away. In the 82
nd minute, junior
Andrew Tremante netted his first goal of the season off of assists from senior
Aidan Curtis and first-year
Sam Davis to ice the game and seal a 3-0 Mammoths' victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst led 18-5 in shots as well as 9-2 in shots on goal, and 6-2 on corner kicks. However, like their game versus Wesleyan a week ago, the Mammoths had one much better statistical half, outshooting the Lions 9-1 in a dominant second-half effort.
* Senior
Max Landa and first-year
Trey Sheppard combined for the shutout. Landa made his triumphant return to the lineup on Saturday after an injury delayed the start of his season, and was not called into action, while Sheppard made two saves on the day.
