NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Amherst College women's basketball team extended their win streak to four with a stellar all-around performance on Tuesday night, taking down the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers 73-29 on the road.
With the victory, the Mammoths improved to 17-4 on the season. They will return home this weekend against NESCAC foe Connecticut College on Friday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 6-13 this season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths jumped out to an early lead, scoring 25 unanswered to open the contest, and never looked back, netting 31 in the quarter. Amherst built their lead utilizing a balanced attack consisting of smooth ball movement in the half court and quick finishing in transition.
Kori Barach led the outburst with 10 points.
* Amherst also got it done on the defensive end in the game's first frame --- they did not allow a single point until the Chargers converted at the rim with 1:34 to go in the quarter. The Mammoths held Colby-Sawyer to just 10 percent from the field on only 10 shot attempts to lead 31-2 at the first horn.
* The second period was much of the same, with more of the Mammoths' squad getting on the scoreboard. Buckets from
Reeya Patel,
Annie McCarthy,
Brielle Renwick, and
Abbey Skinner maintained the 29-point margin despite a surge from the Chargers. Amherst led 41-12 at the half.
* The second half saw the Mammoths again come out firing. Liddle got things going with layups on the team's first two offensive possessions before Mendell converted a tough look while getting fouled. The Chargers buried three free throws before Amherst went on a 9-0 run to widen the lead to 57-17, where it stayed for the rest of the quarter.
* The Mammoths did not allow the lead to fall below 40 the rest of the way.
Anna Tranum polished off the game win with a three-pointer to bring the final score to 73-29.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* All 13 players on the Mammoths' roster scored against the Chargers. Barach and Liddle lead the way with 12 points apiece followed by Patel and Tranum, who recorded 9 and 8 points, respectively.
* Barach also lead the team in rebounds, with 7, and assists, with 6.
* The Mammoths' 44-point victory was their second-largest of the season, only one point shy of their season best (61-16, against SUNY Poly on Dec. 8).
